Black – most of the pup will be simply black, possibly a bit of white as markings on muzzle, head, chest, feet.

Sable – black tipped solid.
Most sables are born very dark, some completely black. The sable can start to come in around week 2, week 4 or so even at 4 months! The sable pups coat will vary thru the life, with the longer darker hairs coming in more or less as they age! Show is Jewelz, our current female. She is from a breeder in Idaho

Sable – chocolate tipped solid.
Very similar to the black tipped sable, only with chocolate.

Parti (white) – it simply means large areas of white on the pup. This sweet boy is one of the most beautiful near full white cockers we have ever had.

Roan does not show on the coat when the pups are born, you can tell only by the pads of the feet at first, then by a smudge on the muzzle. Roan presents in the white areas of the pup. Here is a blue roan.
Shown is our Keiki – you can see her white areas do not look white as an adult. It looks grey, called blue in a cocker. She is from a breeder in South Carolina

Chocolate roan.
Same as blue roan, only with chocolate instead of black.
Shows is our stud Chip from a breeder in TX

Sable roan
Also the same as blue and chocolate roan, only in a sable variety. So the white areas show both light and dark spot because of the sable – so beautiful!
Shown is our past pup Marley – parents are Leia and Bandit

Merle – this gene does show up at birth. It presents in the coat in the NON white areas. Merle dilutes the exisitng color. Merle pups can have a partial eye in blue, or 1 or 2 full blue eyes. Some also have a freckle in their eye!
Shown here is a solid blue merle, with just a touch of white on his chest and feet. You can see the merle is the same at both ages. This is a past pup of ours from Jewelz and Blue

Solid chocolate merle – no matter what shade of merle, the pup can have tan markings.
Shown is our own NaLani with tan markings. Her parents are Leia and Bandit. She is a full sister to Mocha!

Ticking – like freckles. They can show up anywhere on the dogs body. You often see them as freckles on the muzzle.
Shown here is our past puppy Finneghan – Calypso and Bandit are his parents

Liver gene – when a cocker has this coloring, it replaces black for these areas – nose and pads of feet. Inside the mouth there is often dark pink instead of black. In Liver gene pups, they often have hazel or green eyes instead of the typical brown!
All chocolate pups have the liver gene. Other color coats can have it as well.
